Opera and Opera Mail both work perfectly, so I assumed it would be the case here, since most people who want email in Vivaldi are probably using Opera Mail. They might try it, give up, and go back to Chrome. I'd expect all Virgin media account using ntlworld servers (and plenty of other people using other servers) are having the same issue, and since the ntlworld addresses were given at a time when everyone was getting emails at home, I think there will be a lot of people who can't use this at the moment. I've spend a considerable amount of time sorting out my emails and now it doesn't work. Good Luck and please correct me if I have got this wrong, I would love to be wrong.I was pretty sure it would fail, but I'm getting desperate at the moment. This was a sad discovery, I have always been a great fan of Google and I find this retention policy now makes it much less attractive. These options are no good for me since after my account was hacked, I don't want to store anything more than 30 days on the Google servers (I am not blaming them for the hack but the incident has made me rethink my online exposure and as a security focused IT specialist I thought I was VERY careful never to expose my passwords).

If you still want POP and webmail, I think your only option is to delete old emails manually using the webmail client.Īlternatively, you could use IMAP or google's offline email client (both store all email on google's cloud). So you can opt to delete email as soon as the pop client downloads them, but this mean you don't have any useful webmail access. Settings -> Forwarding and POP/IMAP -> POP Download ->When messages are Accessed With POP Gmail will only take notice of the setting on the gmail webmail client i.e. This is also displayed when you create a new gmail account.Īfter another series or tests and further searching, gmail takes no notice what so ever of the Thunderbird's pop settings for 'keep on server', or 'delete from server'.

I thought that my exposure was limited to un-deleted items in my inbox but no, any email, any that I thought I had deleted would all have been available and could have been downloaded, any password reminders, account details, anything ! Gmail spotted it and notified me so I could change passwords etc.

I know what you mean and only I realised the horror of the situation when someone managed to hack into my gmail account last week (I suspect an Android app). I would be so happy if someone can prove I am incorrect Or forgo the webmail access and just use your offline POP client.

Use pop and delete mails from the web client.Use pop and only keep the last 30 days on gmail. To all the other posts, yes I did try empty trashcans, using "recent:username" trying thunderbird and opera and spending a day scouring other forums.Īs I see it there are 2 alternatives if you want POP wit the occasional webmail access POP only offers one-way communication, which means that actions you take in the mail program (like marking a message as read) won’t be synced to Gmail." "POP: POP (Post office protocol) is a one-way download of your messages that allows you to access your mail with a mail program like Outlook Express or Apple Mail. I thought that my exposure was limited to items in my inbox but no, any email, any that I thought I had deleted would all have been available.
